What are hours of service regulations for truck drivers in NC?

On Behalf of | Jul 15, 2024 | Truck Accidents

Truck drivers play a crucial role in the transportation industry. However, some drive while fatigued, leading to potential mistakes or accidents. To ensure safety on the roads, North Carolina follows federal hours of service regulations for truck drivers.

Maximum driving limits

Truck drivers can drive no more than 11 hours after they have spent 10 consecutive hours off duty. This regulation ensures that drivers are well-rested before starting their driving shift. Additionally, after the 14th consecutive hour following when they come on duty, they are not allowed to drive even if they have taken breaks.

Rest breaks

Drivers must take a break for at least 30 minutes after accumulating eight hours of driving without a minimum interruption of 30 minutes. This break helps reduce fatigue and ensures drivers stay alert on the road. The break can include off-duty or sleeper berth time, but it must total 30 minutes.

Weekly driving limits

To prevent long-term fatigue, drivers must adhere to weekly driving limits. Drivers cannot drive more than 60 hours in seven consecutive days or 70 hours in eight consecutive days. After reaching this limit, they must take at least 34 consecutive hours off duty before restarting the weekly cycle.

Sleeper berth provision

The sleeper berth provision allows drivers to break up their 10 hours of required off-duty time into two sections. One period must be no less than two hours long and the driver may spend it in or out of the sleeping area. The other must be spent inside the berth and be a minimum of seven hours in a row. Both periods combined must total at least 10 hours.

Ensuring safety through regulations

Hours of service regulations play a vital role in maintaining road safety in North Carolina. By following these rules, drivers can reduce fatigue-related accidents and ensure they remain alert while driving.

These regulations not only protect the drivers but also ensure the safety of everyone sharing the road. Understanding and adhering to these rules is essential for a safer transportation system.
